Hagrid's first day with Harry - Part 1

Hagrid found himself in a vast valley with rolling green hills as far as the eye could see. He was
exhausted but determined in his mission. He was now so close to ending his pursuit then suddenly,
a song-like roar echoed in the distance, Hagrid turned and ran in the direction of the roar, his pink
umbrella in tow. It was then that he finally gazed upon the majestic beast he had been tracking
relentlessly for days now, the Common Welsh Green dragon. The Welsh Green emerged from behind
a hill and took flight, she circled in the sky, watching the ground closely for her next meal.

“It won’ be me!” said Hagrid as he strode towards the dragon.

Hagrid watched the beast intently as she dove at the sheep scurrying around in a panic. The dragon
shot long jets of fire at the ground, creating even more of a panic. She dove and swiped with her claws
at the sheep, missing rather clumsily. Finally she caught one and with her back now turned focusing on
her meal, she wouldn’t see Hagrid coming.

Just one clean shot thought Hagrid as he aimed his umbrella at the dragon and fired. Two ropes shot out
of the tip of his umbrella and hurled themselves towards the beast.. The first rope went sailing past her,
missing by quite a margin. The second rope was a direct hit. She let out a melodious roar before falling
to the ground as the rope entwined itself around her neck. Hagrid approached her cautiously.

“Well aren’ you a beau’iful one,” said Hagrid softly in an attempt to calm the dragon “I’m goin’ ter call
you Dorothy.” Two narrow streams of fire shot out her, Hagrid quickly jumped backwards and took it as
a sign of agreeance. Hagrid summoned all his bravery and with one giant leap, he mounted the dragon
and used the rope as reins as Dorothy started to take flight.

Hagrid was the happiest he could be on the back of Dorothy, it was always a dream of his to be able to
ride on the back of his very own dragon. Then the strangest thing happened, a newspaper fell out of the
sky and landed on Hagrid, then he heard the hooting of an owl with some strange flapping sounds. He
now opened his eyes.

Hagrid woke up to the sound of Harry yelling.

“Hagrid!” said Harry loudly. “There’s an owl”

“Pay him,” Grumbled Hagrid as he turned over into the sofa, barely awake, wishing he was still
dreaming.

“What?”

“He wants payin’ fer deliverin’ the paper. Look in the pockets.” It was too early to be explaining
things to young wizards, no matter how famous, thought Hagrid.

“Give him five Knuts,” said Hagrid, now a little more awake.

“Knuts?”

“The Little bronze ones.”

Hagrid contemplated turning over and going back to sleep, returning to his dream that was cut too short,
before yawning loudly, sitting up and stretching. There was a lot to do today he thought, which made the
idea of sleep that much more appealing.

“Best be Off, Harry, lots ter do today, gotta get up ter London an’ buy all yer stuff fer school,”

Hagrid stood up and almost hit his head on the ceiling, after all these years he still wasn’t used to
Muggle houses.

“Um - - Hagrid?” squeaked Harry.

“Mm?” replied Hagrid who was now pulling on his boots.

“I haven’t got any money -- and you heard Uncle Vernon last night … he won’t pay for me to go and
learn magic.”

“Don’t worry about that,” Said Hagrid scratching his head. “D’yeh think yer parents didn’t leave yeh
anything?”

“But if their house was destroyed --”
“They didn’ keep their gold in the house, boy!” Just how little does he know! Thought Hagrid. “Nah
first stop fer us is Gringotts. Wizards’ bank.” Hagrid knew he would have to explain about the bank but
that didn’t stop him from eyeing the sausages, he was starving. “ Have a sausage, they’re not bad
cold -- an’ I wouldn’ say no teh a bit o’ yer birthday cake, neither.”

“Wizards have banks?”

“Just the one. Gringotts. Run by goblins.” Hagrid answered a little disappointedly, he desperately
wanted approval to eat some of Harry’s cake and didn’t want to seem ill mannered, despite his growing
hunger he resisted the urge to grab a slice. Harry seemed too excited by it all and not bothered by the
thought of food at the moment. Hagrid watched as Harry dropped one of the delicious sausages on to
the floor.

“Goblins?”

“Yeah -- so yeh’d be mad ter try an’ rob it, I’ll tell yeh that. Never mess with goblins, Harry. Gringotts
is the safest place in the world fer anything yeh want ter kee safe -- ‘cept maybe Hogwarts. As a matter
o’fact, I gotta visit Gringotts anyway. Fer Dumbledore. Hogwarts business.” Hagrid felt a profound
sense of pride and stood up straight. “He usually gets me ter do important stuff fer him. Fetchin’ you
gettin’ things from Gringotts -- knows he can trust me, see. Hagrid couldn’t help but grin.

“Got everythin’? Come on, then.”

Hagrid stepped out of house and onto the rock. The sky was clear, perfect flying weather, too bad I can’t
use magic, he thought.

“How did you get here?” asked Harry.

“Flew,” said Hagrid

“Flew?”

Hagrid turned his attention to the shabby, hired boat that was now filled with water from the storm,
he so desperately wished he could fly.

“Yeah -- but we’ll go back in this. Not s’pposed ter use magic now I’ve got yeh.” sighed Hagrid.

Hagrid climbed into the boat with Harry, who was still staring at him. His eyes were full of wonder.
Hagrid remembered what it was like to be in Harry’s shoes. The first time he witnessed magic, the first
time he saw a Hippogryph or the first time he saw a three headed dog -- though that was only a few
months ago now. Hagrid remembered seeking Fluffy out and his mind started to wander, what it was to
be guarding, it was best not to think about such things right now. The Wizarding world was still finding
ways to surprise him but he was yet to have his very own dragon.

“Seems a shame ter row, though,” said Hagrid, giving Harry a mischievous smile.
“If I was ter -- er -- speed things up a bit, would yeh mind not mentionin’ it at Hogwarts?”

“Of course not.” said Harry.

Hagrid pulled out his pink umbrella, tapped it twice on the side of the boat and they sped off toward land.
Hagrid couldn’t help but grin once more, he had felt so limited without his magic and although it had
only been hours -- most of that spent sleeping -- he had missed it dearly.

“Why would you be mad to try and rob Gringotts?” Harry asked

“Spells -- enchantments,” grunted Hagrid as he unfolded his newspaper. “They say there’s dragons
guardin’ the highsecurity vaults. And then yeh gotta find yer way -- Gringotts is hundreds of miles
under London, see. Deep under the Underground. Yeh’d die of hunger tryin’ ter get out, even if yeh
did manage ter get yer hands on summat.”

Hagrid found himself thinking about dragons again, he had a feeling that his dream would be with him
for quite sometime he was already missing his Dorothy. Hagrid went back to reading his newspaper,
a few articles caught his eye.

“CENTAURS! WHAT DO WE REALLY KNOW ABOUT THEM?”

“GOBLINS, IS YOUR GOLD TRULY SAFE WITH THEM?”

Codswallop thought Hagrid, he flipped to the sports section. He frowned as he read the predictions
for the upcoming Quidditch matches. Well at least he had the Hogwarts games to look forward too,
he thought.

“Know anythin’ about Quidditch Harry?” asked Hagrid.

“Quidditch?”

“I thought Quidditch might have been the one thing you knew somethin’ ‘bout”

“Is Quidditch some sort of wizard food?”Asked Harry inquisitively. “It certainly sounds like a type of
sausage of sorts.”

“Yeh really don’ know anything do yeh!” said Hagrid.

Harry seemed to have an inquisitive look on his face.

“Well there’s no fun in me spoilin’ everything for yeh -- you’ll jus’ have ter wait until yeh’re at
Hogwarts ter learn all about Quidditch!”

Hagrid flipped through the pages of the Daily Prophet once more before reading an article about the
Ministry of Magic that almost made him ashamed to be a wizard.

“Ministry o’ Magic messin’ things up as usual,” He muttered to himself as he turned the page again.

“There’s a Ministry of Magic?” Harry asked.

“Course,” said Hagrid. “They wanted Dumbledore fer Minister, o’ course, but he’d never leave
Hogwarts, so old Cornelius Fudge got the Job. Bungler if ever there was one. So he pelts Dumbledore
with owls every morning, askin fer advice.”

Hagrid couldn’t imagine a Hogwarts without Dumbledore. There isn’t a wizard who is kinder or wiser
than Albus Dumbledore, thought Hagrid.

“But what does a Ministry of Magic do?”

Mess things up for starters thought Hagrid to himself. “Well, their main job is to keep it from the
Muggles that there’s still witches an’ wizards up and down the country.”

“Why?”

“Why? Blimey, Harry, everyone’d be wantin’ magic solutions to their problems. Nah we’re best left
alone.”

Hagrid did not like to think about a world where all Muggles knew about the existence of witches and
wizards. At this moment the boat bumped gently into the harbor wall. A familiar feeling settled over
him. Hagrid folded up his newspaper, there was lots to do today, many places to visit and he was not
looking forward to Gringotts.

Back into the world of Muggles, Hagrid was eager to get to Diagon Alley.
